Cook County High School sophomore Lars Scannell participated in the Minnesota State Class A Individual Tennis Tournament on Thursday and Friday, June 6-7, at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Lars qualified for this tournament by winning the Section 7A Individual Tennis Tournament, held in Virginia, Minnesota on May 22.
Lars’ first-round opponent was Nathan Huber, a senior from St. Peter. Lars played pretty well but his opponent was a little more consistent and made very few unforced errors. Lars ended up losing the match 6-3, 6-3.
Lars moved into the consolation bracket after losing his firstround match. His first opponent in the consolation quarterfinals was David Schneck, a junior from Fergus Falls. Lars found out quickly that there are no weak players at the state tournament. He had to battle in his second match, winning a second set tiebreaker and the match, 6-2,7-6(2).
On Friday morning, Lars played his consolation semifinal match against Jess Hansen, a freshman from Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd. Lars got off to a strong start and cruised to a 6-2,6-0 victory and a spot in the consolation finals.
In the consolation championship match, Lars played Ty Misialek, a junior from East Grand Forks, who had beaten CCHS graduate David Bergstrom last year (2012) in the state consolation semifinals. Lars prevailed in a tough match, winning the consolation championship, 6-2,7-5.
Lars was able to demonstrate to everyone watching the tournament that he is a player to be reckoned with. He displayed his variety of tennis skills, confidence, intelligence, determination and a lot of class, which made his supporters very proud. Lars has unlimited potential as a tennis player and, hopefully, he will continue to develop his skills and game, taking it to another level.
Congratulations, Lars, on a great finish to your tennis season and good luck in the days and years ahead! Go Vikes!
