A warm year with drought conditions over the past summer across the region has caused Lake Superior’s water level to be lower than usual.
Lake Superior is almost one foot (30 centimeters) lower than last December, cited the US Army Corps of Engineers. And 44 centimeters lower than it was in December 2019.
For those who want a conversion between feet and centimeters, 30.48 centimeters equals 12 inches.
Overall, the Big Lake is 10 centimeters below its long-term average for December.
As of December 24, the Army Corps of Engineers forecasted Lake Superior’s water level to be 601.41 feet.
The Corp predicts Lake Superior will be three inches below its norm in January 2022.
Long-term averages for the Great Lakes have been recorded from 1918 to the present. Those averages are recorded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Center for Operational Oceanic Products and Services. At the same time, the water level forecasts are conducted by the Department of Army Detroit District, Corps of Engineers.
