Tim Nelson, planning director, came before commissioners on December 3 with a proposed fiscal year 2020 Lake Superior North Watershed work plan that involves Lake County.
Cook and Lake counties have worked together to implement the Lake Superior North Watershed “One Watershed One Plan” work plan. The state of Minnesota awarded funding of $599,767 towards the implementation of the project.
Cook County Land Services proposed and received $130,000 of that funding to help fully implement the county’s existing Subsurface Septic Treatment System (SSTS) Ordinance and facilitate a process to upgrade the project.
The program aims to reduce the number of nutrients loading into the groundwater through the reduction of failing septic systems identified by the Lakeshore Septic Compliance program.
Nelson said there is an additional request for $30,000 for staffing resources to help facilitate the interaction between respective property owners and county staff.
The goal is to make sure to follow through with bringing all of the septic systems determined to be failing into compliance.
Nelson asked commissioners to approve the work plan and acknowledge Lake County as the fiscal agent for this portion of the grant, which the commissioners agreed to do.
