Think the water level is higher in the Grand Marais harbor than usual? Do you see less beach and more “lake” than normal for this time of year?
If so, your suspicions are correct. According to the International Lake Superior Board of Control, Lake Superior is 8 inches above its average level for this time of year.
With the melt of winter into spring comes a rise in lake levels. For Lake Superior that is typically an increase of 3 inches in April, but last month the lake rose 6 inches. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, Superior’s lake level will remain 5 to 8 inches above average for the next six months.
