One of the best public spectator sporting events on the North Shore is coming back.

Presented by Thunder Bay Yacht Club, the Lake Superior International Yacht Race is one of the oldest annual sailing races on Lake Superior.

Established in 1963, the course has changed many times, but it always crosses the border between Canada and the United States, and competing boats and crew come from both countries. The enduring legacy of the race is the many warm friendships formed by participating sailors. Frequently, mixed crews of Canadian and American sailors race on the same boat.

This year’s race begins in Grand Marais on Saturday, August 4, and ends in Thunder Bay on Sunday, August 5, with the finish line off the end of Pier 1 at Prince Arthur’s Landing Marina. The course is 77 nautical miles long.
