For the last two summers my dog, Lucee, and I walked early mornings along the shore of Lake Superior, through Grand Marais’ “downtown” and along stretches of Highway 61. I observed work and progress with MnDot’s Highway 61 project in our community.
My wife, Mary, and I recently traveled by car through Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan noting numerous highway construction projects in each of states. I watched for but could not sense the same intensity or purpose that I’ve witnessed with MnDot’s project. Sometimes workers and equipment seemed idle. Not like the hustle bustle construction work back home.
Bravo to the wonderful project outcome along Highway 61’s route through Grand Marais and Cook County. During this time, a LHB Surveyor, Tony, and three MNDot engineers, Dave, Greg and Jim, 1) overviewed and assisted contracted workers and 2) interacted with property owners toward satisfactory design outcome by their businesses.
With our short construction season, I learned that MNDot establishes and reinforces deadlines required of contractors’ work. Now, the project is nearly completed with tree plantings, flower planters, and even an array of benches.
Much RESPECT for MNDot!
