Knowledge Bowl team wins Section Championship!

After winning the section championship, the I.S.D. 166 varsity Knowledge Bowl Team is off to the state meet.

This is the first time in eight years that Cook County has won sections, but the team has qualified for state multiple times since then because Cook County consistently places in the top couple of squads at sections.

Leading the I.S.D. 166 team to the section title were Gus Hahn, Aria-Fitzgerald-Wells, Mj Wharton, Tristan Surbaugh and Rowan Lindholm.

Competition is always tough at sections, and this year was no different as Cook County nudged out Duluth Marshall and International Falls in a nail-biter to take the win.

The kids now head to Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd, Minnesota, where the two-day state competition is held April 13-14.

During the meet, kids are presented with oral and written questions from various subjects, including math, science, history, language, literature, music, and geography. Also included are current events and general interest topics in the five-round competition.

Senior High Knowledge Bowl, says the state’s website, “Is an interdisciplinary academic contest that combines intense competition with the incredible skill of knowledge recall. Team members work cooperatively to solve oral and written questions while teams race against each other to be the first to buzz in and answer the question correctly.”

Kids are asked questions requiring critical thinking, problem-solving, and memorization skills.

Five oral rounds will be held at the state competitions, with fifteen tiebreaker questions provided for judging if needed.

The Minnesota Service Cooperative KNOWLEDGE BOWL provides questions throughout the season and at the state.

Long-time coach David Liechty works with the kids to prepare them for meets, and the group often practices at lunchtime.
