It seems like an annual rite of passage, but once again the Cook County High School Knowledge Bowl team has qualified for the state tournament, taking third place in the 21-team field at the Northeast Region 3 tournament held Tuesday, March 19, on the Iron Range.
“We were in first place most of the day, and just got eclipsed in the last round,” said coach David Liechty. “Regular meets end after four rounds; if we’d have ended it then, we would’ve won…but that’s not how meets work.
“The entire Cook County program won the 2019 Sportsmanship Award for the Northeast Region,” added coach Liechty.
Representing the Vikings at state will be Sylvia Berka, Adam Dorr, Emma Gesch, Robin Henrikson and Lance Bartol.
With more than 800 teams from 290 Minnesota school districts participating in senior high Knowledge Bowl competitions, the Vikings will be one of 48 teams advancing to the State Knowledge Bowl meet.
During the Knowledge Bowl meets, teams of students compete in written and oral rounds by answering questions related to all areas of learning typical of secondary education programs. Questions test students’ recall, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
According to the 2018-2019 Minnesota Knowledge Bowl handbook, questions posed to competitors at the meets have been developed in 15 curriculum areas proportionate to the relative emphasis each area receives in a secondary curriculum. The questions have been randomized so that within each round, there will not be a string of items from a particular curriculum area.
The state meet will be held at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd area on April 10 and 11. Go Vikings!
