Kirk Tofte, 68, passed away on February 2, 2019 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa. Kirk was born in Duluth, Minnesota to Orton and Margaret (Anderson) Tofte. He was raised in Tofte, Minnesota along the north shore of Lake Superior, and graduated from Cook County Minnesota High School and from Gustavus Adolphus College. He worked in the insurance and financial-services industry in Des Moines for nearly four decades. Kirk was preceded in death by his parents, brother Mike, and beloved dog Dinah. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Barb; his two children, Sarah (Marie Holmes) and Susie (Adam Hollander); four grandchildren, Max Tofte, Olive Tofte, Bertie Hollander and Franny Hollander; and siblings Orton Jr. (Karen), Terry (Rebecca), Greg (Meg), Margaret (Bill Altemus), Ellie (Jeff Holte), Brian (Kelly), and Scott (Brenda). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and in-laws. Whether we knew him as Kirk, Dad, Uncle Kirk, or Papa, Kirk will always be remembered for his love of good books, his quick wit, and his passion for political debate. Above all, knowing and loving each of his grandchildren was the success story of his life. A celebration of Kirk’s life will be held in Tofte this summer.
