Last week, I shared these words with you. “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is Yours.” I Chronicles 29:11
Today, let the text add: “Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; You are exalted as head over all.”
King of the mountain. King of the raft. How many of us have played that rough game on the hay in the barn or on the dirt of the construction site or on the raft in the lake?
Many people think of life as being just like acquiring “kingship” on the mountain. If you haven’t said it yourself, you’ve heard it said: “You have to fight and push and shove and claw your way to the top” (to whatever success you dream of for yourself in life).
“And once you get there you had better fight all the harder to stay on top or somebody will come along and push you off.”
It’s certainly not that way with God. By His act of creation, by His very nature, He is King of the Mountain–of the earth–of the heavens –of all that is.
With the words of King David we praise God saying: “Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; You are exalted as head over all.”
Think about it. The most intelligent people, the sum total of all human knowledge, the greatest world rulers and the worst thereof, the individualists of the human race, even Satan himself cannot topple the Creator from His rightful rule over all things.
Think about it. His Word, all of nature, and human history attests to it!
God is great. Even more important for us, God’s love for us is great. God, who rules all things, loved us so much that He gave and sacrificed His only Son to save us from our sin and its guilt; to save us from its consequences; to save us for our present and eternal good. God, who controls all things, loves us still to the nth degree with such a loving concern that He knows even when a hair falls from our heads; when sadness and joy attends us. This is witness to the great depths and the infinite detail of God’s grace and mercy and you have Christ’s death and resurrection as proof positive!
With confidence in the love of God through Jesus Christ, you can say with the Apostle Paul: “I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Dear friend in Christ, God rules. He rules the world; He rules the universe; He rules both great and small; He rules us and He does for our good and His glory. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Therefore you can rest assured and be safe and secure in His love and under His rule. Think about it again.
Each week a member of the Cook County Ministerium will offer Spiritual Reflections. This week our contributor is Reverend Dean Rudloff, pastor of Life in Christ Lutheran Church, which currently meets at the Cook County Community Center, Sunday at 9 a.m.
