Kids’ summer programs, meals offered through YMCA

The countdown to summer is on and kids aren’t the only ones looking forward to the summer months.

The Cook County YMCA is getting ready for an influx of programming and activities that stimulate both mind and body, in an effort to help children have an amazing summer. “It’s important that children both play and learn throughout the summer,” said Ashley Green, childcare director.

The Cook County Youth Agency Coalition offers a day camp program which provides kids with adventure, healthy fun, personal growth and friendships that can take a so-so summer and turn it into a memory that lasts a lifetime. Camp provides a welcoming environment for kids where they can belong, build relationships, develop character and discover their potential. Day camp runs from 7:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. with varied activities each day and week. There will be field trips throughout the summer to enjoy all that the North Shore has to offer.

While these programs keep local children busy and engaged throughout the summer, kids can’t focus when they’re hungry. Children who rely on low-cost lunch plans during the school year are at risk of going hungry when school’s not in session. Breakfast and lunch will be served Monday-Thursday over the summer in the school cafeteria. Any child age 18 and younger may join for a free meal (no income criteria or restrictions to full-time residents, all are welcome).
