The Cook County KIDS PLUS Board received a funding request for youth baseball equipment early this spring. The Northland Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy grant, with funding by Minnesota Power, had just become available so the timing was perfect for getting local students involved in grant writing.

Connor Franks and Chance Finke, both fifth graders, began writing the grant with help from Tom Nelson and KIDS PLUS Coordinator Ilena Berg. In the grant, the youth wrote that proper equipment would help the ball players have more fun, be safe, and build sportsmanship. Connor worked over his spring break writing and finalizing the grant with help from his mom, Julie Nelson.

Connor, Chance and Ilena Berg are delighted and proud to announce that the grant has been awarded. New baseball equipment will be purchased this summer. The equipment will be used with Youth Baseball and housed with KIDS PLUS so that it may be used with other programs such as Summer KIDS Camp and the After School Lounge.

Berg said, “Congratulations to all who worked hard on this grant!”
