Kenneth A. “Fatty” Sherer, 70, of Grand Portage, passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth, surrounded by his family, on June 21, 2012.
He was born on September 2, 1941, in Cass Lake, MN, to Kenneth V. and Dorothy (Clark) Sherer and was a member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
Kenneth graduated from Cook County High School and continued his education in Minneapolis, MN and Sacramento, CA. He later worked for Honeywell and the Bureau of Indian Affairs eventually returning to his home in Grand Portage. While in Grand Portage, Kenneth served his people in several different capacities. He was an economic development planner, grant writer, worked at the Grand Portage State Park, and served for many years on the Grand Portage Tribal Council. He was also a commercial fisherman, logger, and trapper.
Kenneth will always be remembered for the love he had for his wife Joyce, his sense of humor, and driving around with his dogs, Tootsie and Trooper.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father; wife Joyce (Tibbetts) Sherer; brothers, Myron, Ronny, Lyle and Stuart Sherer and sister, Delores Dinger.
Kenneth is survived by daughters Michelle Begay,
Audrey Tsinne-Gilmore, and
Kimberly Kennedy; brothers Robert and Melvin Sherer; sisters Sandra Johnson, Barbara Hakala, Cheryl Kauppi, Janis Deschampe, Elizabeth Simmons, Marlys Sherer, Marlene Myers, and Joan Johnson and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Grand Portage Health Services, EMS crew, and the staff and doctors at St. Mary’s/Essentia Health for the excellent care and compassion that was given.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 27 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Portage.
