After a long tenure on the Grand Marais City Council, Tim Kennedy said this would be his last term.

“After serving on the Grand Marais City Council for the past 18 years, I have made the decision not to run for reelection in November. The demands of my time have shifted and require that I provide more time to care for the needs of my wife and her health condition. I will miss working with the Mayor, Council, Administration and city staff. They are all committed to making Grand Marais a better place today and tomorrow.”

Kennedy said he appreciated the trust residents placed on him “to make decisions for the benefit of our great community.

“I don’t pretend to think every decision I made was perfect but every decision I made was with a focus on making Grand Marais a better place to live, work, raise a family, own a business or vacation. A lot has been accomplished during my tenure working with a variety of mayors and councilors.

“When I first came to the council, the downtown sewer, water, and street project was started and completed. Harbor Park became a reality. Additional investment was made in improving sewer and water services to aging infrastructure. A new public works/ street department garage and storage facility was relocated from the Rec Park and waterfront.”

Also, added Tim, “The Grand Marais Recreation Area has grown and provides significant revenue to help offset local property taxes.

“New affordable homes have been built in Grand Marais through the cooperation of the city of Grand Marais and the Economic Development Authority that have made home ownership a reality for 11 families. The city is currently working with the Minnesota Department of Transportation on a new corridor for Highway 61 which has been many years in the planning and will result in a safer area for vehicles traveling on Highway 61 while also promoting and encouraging safety for pedestrians and bikers. There are many other projects that have been completed or are in the planning stages, large and small, that contribute to making Grand Marais the community we choose as our home.”

By announcing his decision early not to seek office, Tim is hoping others will choose to make a commitment to run for the city council position.

“The job can be challenging, but also rewarding. I encourage anyone to step-up, be a leader, and file for election.”
