The Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department recently held its annual meeting. GTVFD Chief Jim Morrison was pleased to present the Outstanding Service Award for 2014 to Kelly and Paul Dahl.
Kelly and Paul, both EMTs as well as emergency room nurses, are active members in the GTVFD. They plan and lead medical training as well as responding to emergency calls. Thanks primarily to Kelly’s efforts, the GTVFD was recently awarded a grant from Mission Lifeline (a project affiliated with the American Heart Association) which enabled the department to purchase a LifePak 12 for the ambulance.
The LifePak 12, an advanced 12-lead EKG machine allows the crew to perform a 12-lead EKG as soon as they are with the patient. The information is then faxed (from one of the fire halls or a local business) directly to the hospital.
Once cellular service is available up the Gunflint Trail this will be done via cellular service.
The LifePak 12 also takes and records vital signs such as blood pressure and pulse rate for continual monitoring of the patient while transporting to the hospital.
Medical Captain Laura Popkes wants everyone to know that rapid diagnosis of a heart attack translates into more efficient, effective and successful treatment. Popkes stated, “Our recent training with the Minnesota Mission Lifeline folks was fantastic, and our department is very grateful that we were awarded the grant for this wonderful lifesaving equipment!”
