JV Knowledge Bowl team takes first place at Mt. Iron

Eight CCHS students traveled to Mountain Iron, Minnesota on Tuesday, October 23 to participate in a Junior Varsity Knowledge Bowl meet against teams from Eveleth- Gilbert, Mesabi East, Cromwell and Northeast Range.

With two kids missing, Vikings’ coach David Liechty formed one team with three kids and one with five. Normally teams each have five kids on them. Some schools will bring more than two teams to Knowledge Bowl meets, which makes for interesting competitions.

At the meets teams compete against each other with the winners moving up until the championship match and the other teams continually competing in lower brackets for places. At times kids are asked to respond verbally and at time judges ask for written responses to queries.

Winning first place was the team made up of Greta Roth, Ella Hedstrom, Annie Lynch, Adrian Howard-Larsen, and Sylvia Berka.

Team two was made up of Jered Paro, Olivia Nesgoda, and Cecelia Chmelik. Although there were three against five, the Vikings’ Team Two took sixth place overall out of 13 teams.
