As a demonstration of our amazing depth, our Cook County-Two Harbors cross country boys won the junior varsity division at Hibbing on Thursday, September 25.

The varsity boys Kiviok Hight (6th in 17:36), Jake Paron (7th in 17:37), Noah Smith (19th in 19:25), Sean MacDonell (34th in 19:36), Finn Garry (51st in 20:25), Brenden Seipke (55th in 20:32) and Will Surbaugh (56th in 20:40) placed 4th behind Proctor, Eveleth-Gilbert, and Mesabi East. This young team has kept each other working hard, improving times, and chomping at the bit to keep that improvement up. Riding their heels has been a large group of driven boys trying to work their way up.

This has driven the team to a higher level and allowed our junior varsity boys to place 1st in their division. This team was led by Sebastian Cannon who came in 8th in 20:53 and Leif Anderson in 10th at 21:03. They were followed by seven other teammates who came in looking strong.

Our girls’ team is coming back and they are racing harder. Matea Acero finished in 16th place with a time of 16:59 for a 4k. She was followed by the great duo of Abigale Seipke and Molly Thomas who finished with a time of 17:40. Alyssa Martinson had a great race and shaved off some time running 18:42 for her 4k. Morgan Weyrens- Welch and Ruby Walsberg looked strong and they were followed by senior Mel Stoddard who had a big personal record with a time of 20:14.

Kate Walsberg, a 7th grader from Two Harbors, was running junior varsity for the day but will be finding herself a seat on the varsity team as she ran an 18:06 on this date and won the junior varsity division.

Robin Henrikson and Sophie Eliasen have made a great pack in the girls junior high division. They ran 12th and 14th place in their 3k race. Also in the junior high division was Chloe Blackburn who ran all the way to the finish and pushed herself. She has worked hard in practice and it has been fun to watch her finish each race with a smile on her face.

Our next race will be taking place at the Enger Golf Course in Duluth. This is the infamous SWAIN meet. At this race we will be putting together a dynamic 7-8th boys’ and girls’ team, a 9-10th boys’ and girls’ team and a varsity girls’ team. It will be fun to see what our young team can do against others at their age level.
