Just Pin It!

Back in the ’50s getting pinned meant you were going steady with a boy. In my day getting pinned was my brother sitting on my chest until I let him pick the TV show for the evening—between you and me it wasn’t a good thing.

Sometimes tears were involved, usually mine, but I got a good kick in every now and then. I think he got his moves watching pro wrestling with Vern Gagne. I got my moves watching David Carradine in Kung Fu. Personally, I think David Carradine was much cooler. Now “Pin It” has a whole new meaning, Pinterest. (I think it’s short for pin things that interest you.)

Pinterest is my favorite new website. I have to warn you ahead of time, though, it’s very addicting. If you cook it’s amazing. If you craft, even better. And if you just like to find fun ideas to jazz up your day, Pinterest will be at the top of the list.

The only thing that might be scary for some of you is that it is all done on the computer and you have to log in to view Pinterest ideas. If you have a computer and can click a mouse you are in business.

To start you have to request an invitation either from Pinterest directly or a friend who is already using the site. (If needed, I can invite you.) Once on, just scroll through the pictures and descriptions until you see something you like. Click on it once and you will see a larger picture, click again and it takes you to the website where you can get the recipe or directions. If you like it, “pin it.”

This will save it to your bulletin board so it is there when you need it. I have numerous bulletin boards for each interest that I have. For example, gardening idea, wedding ideas, cool food, inspirational quotes, and craft ideas for the bazaar and so on. Think of it as a huge online scrapbook full of newspaper clippings and ideas. This is where it gets addicting. There are pages and pages of so many ideas you won’t know where to start.

There are a couple of different ways to view Pinterest, one is to follow other people you know and see which websites they have pinned. Another good way is to do a search for whatever you are looking for; today I needed some vegetarian ideas. By typing vegetarian into the search menu I came up with pages of meatless recipes. Or if you have no idea what you want you can pull down the main “Everything” menu and see all the categories of ideas there.

I recently hosted an evening of wine and appetizers at my house—eight recipes came from Pinterest…. it was amazing! I had so much fun trying some new and different foods. It was challenging to see if I could make all the appetizers look as good as the pictures. By “pinning it” I think I “nailed it.”

Never be afraid to try
something new. Remember,
amateurs built the ark;
professionals built the Titanic.
