The Cook County High School junior varsity Knowledge Bowl team has been hard at work since September, researching and memorizing facts before facing off with students around the region. Their hard work has paid off in a phenomenal season of scholarly competition.
The 9th and 10th graders have formed two teams that have traveled to Mountain Iron several times this fall earning top honors. Team 1 is Sean MacDonell, Will Seaton, Morgan Weyrens-Welch, Andrew Lashinski and Jared Spry. Team 2 is Jaret Baker, Lucas Phillips, Erica Weisberg, Pete Summers, and Julia Larsen.
The JV team competes in three meets. They started off well at the first meet of the season on October 16. Team 1 came in 2nd out of 25 teams and Team 2 finished 21st.
On October 30, the JV teams traveled to Mountain Iron again and team 1 finished in 1st place and JV team 2 made huge improvement, finishing in 9th place.
The final regular season Knowledge Bowl competition for CCHS was November 13. The top 24 teams out of 118 teams advance to the final regional tournament. As they headed to Mountain Iron, the Cook County teams were ranked 1st and 20th out of 48 teams from across the state.
At the final meet, the Cook County students again had stellar finishes. Team 2 finished 12th of 24 teams. Team 1 won the day, coming in first and advancing to the regional competition on Wednesday, November 20.
Coach April Wahlstrom said the Cook County students represent the county well. “Many of the readers love our team because they are so kind, great sports and very focused,” she said.
At press time, Cook County team 1 was heading home from the regional meet—which they won! Look for more on that event in an upcoming issue.
