Playing in a must win or go home game, the Vikings took an 8-2 victory over Eveleth on Friday, July 30 in a game played in Ely.
Paul Dorr had a great night on the mound. The right hander pitched a complete seven inning game to take the win. Paul gave up 10 hits, struck out six, walked one and gave up two late runs in the game.
After a scoreless first inning the Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the second scoring one run off a wild pitch. The Vikings tallied one run in each of the third and fourth innings before adding two in the fifth and three in the sixth. A single by Jacob Carpenter brought in two runs in the sixth.
Eveleth didn’t score until the fifth when they brought in one run and then added one more run in the seventh. R. Niska and L. Linhost each collected an RBI for the Golden Bears.
Both teams collected ten hits. Rylen N. was three for four at the plate to lead the Golden Bears. Meanwhile, Amos Falter was two for four, Hunter Gomez was two for four, and Braylen Hoff had two hits in four plate appearances lead the Vikings. Also getting one hit each was Ray Dressley, Jacob Carpenter, Cy Oberholtzer and Jake Stadler, who also walked twice.
Eveleth finished with three fielding errors while the Vikings had two. The Vikings finished with six walks and the Golden Bears one walk.
Vikings versus the loser of the Virginia/Esko game
Following their win over the Eveleth Golden Bears the Cook County/Silver Bay Jr Legion baseball team had to travel down the road to play Esko in Soudan. Esko was the winner in the game against Virginia.
The game was close throughout, with the Vikings leading 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning. A single by Esko’s Berglund brought two runners across the plate and the lead went 6-5 to Esko.
The Vikings would never regain the lead and fell 7-6.
Jake Stadler was the losing pitcher. Jake pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs while striking out one batter and giving up two walks.
Esko used three pitchers in the game. Their starer lasted 4.2 innings, giving up five runs off five hits while striking out two and walking four Vikings. Esko’s middle reliever pitched one and two-thirds inning, allowing four hits and one run to earn the victory. Marcidoni came in out of the bullpen and threw two-thirds of an inning to earn the save.
The Vikings big inning came in the fifth when doubles by Hunter Gomez and Ray Dressley and a single by Braylen Hoff brought five runs across the plate.
The Vikings outhit Esko ten hits to nine. Amos Stadler was two for three with a walk. Jake Stadler was three for four, Braylen Hoff two for four, and the following batters each had one hit, Hunter Gomez, Ray Dressley, and Paul Dorr.
With the loss the Vikings bowed out of the Junior Legion playoffs.
