Vikings’ junior high boys’ basketball coach, John Jacobsen’s team, ended its season with a 21-3 record, which might be the best record any middle school team from Cook County has ever posted.

The boys traveled to Hibbing on Saturday, April 1 to play in the Pacesetter tournament.

“My middle school basketball team took consolation championship in the Pacesetter tournament. We won the last game at the buzzer in overtime with 60-foot shot. A great end to a great season,” Jacobsen said.

Vaughn Swindlehurst was the player who made the long heave towards the basket that won the game for the Vikings.

“It was a great shot, a very exciting end to the game,” the coach said.

“We came out sluggish in our first game against Bigfork. We were down about 14 at the half and lost by five points, but the kids came back strong. We beat Greenway- Coleraine in our second game and then played Cherry, winning in overtime.

“Overall the kids played very well. They haven’t been able to practice much the last month because the gyms are taken up by softball and baseball practice. So I would say they played very well with little practice.”

The season is over, but one more tournament looms on the horizon.

“There is a possibility that we will play in a tournament in June at Maple Grove High School. The kids want to keep playing, but I will check to see if the tournament has different classes. If it doesn’t, we won’t go. No reason to travel that far to face a big school and not have a chance to compete.”
