It’s a wrap! The Lutsen Junior Alpine Ski Team’s race season is over. Sunday, February 28 was our last event of the year, the Championship at Mont Du Lac. Our junior shredders competed in six of the seven Northland Junior Race Series events that were held. We had a great year!
Our kids come from all corners of the county. We hope to see more kids next year. If you have interest, contact one of our coaches. It’s more affordable than you may think.
Here is what our current group accomplished this year: 5 – third place finishes, 10 – second place finishes and 19 first place finishes! Whoo hoo! Underlying these numbers is a lot of training and progress. Our little ones graduated from the snowplow, others are going from recreational skiers to serious Alpine athletes and the top skiers are learning to block gates and fine tuning their carving skills, or as we say, “tip and rip!”
The ostensible goal of our program is to become better racers. That’s happening. So is a whole lot of fun and camaraderie. It’s inspiring to see these kids out in the winter no matter the conditions: laughing, pushing themselves and simply experiencing the windy joy of flying down the slope on a pair of skinny boards. Lucky bums.
A big thanks to all our coaches this year who gave lots of time setting up gates, rebuckling boots, checking on chilly cheeks, and doing the positive role-modeling.
We had a lot of good support. Lutsen Mountains is very generous, Lutsen and Schroeder townships made financial contributions and our local business community stepped up with many dollars of support. Thanks to all!
Hey, ski team, Coach John wants you to get out and free ski. Bring your parents along and your friends. Enjoy every turn, don’t forget the view.
