June activities at the Care Center

The warmer weather is definitely welcomed by residents at the North Shore Health Care Center. Many elders have already enjoyed time on the patios, including a delightful picnic on Memorial Day. Everyone is looking forward to the official first day of summer.

Several of our wonderful volunteers turned out for our Volunteer Appreciation Brunch held on May 23. This was a time to honor and celebrate the folks who so generously give their time to enhance the lives of those who call the Care Center “home.” You make a difference, and you are special.

It was a fun afternoon on May 29 when 15 youngsters from Great Expectations visited the Care Center. They brought several plants that they had grown to share with the elders. The flowers were planted in our garden boxes on the patio to enjoy all summer long. Their thoughtful gesture is very much appreciated!

The monthly birthday party will be held on June 13 at 3 p.m. to celebrate Donna Willett and Honey Rosen. Honey will celebrate a milestone birthday in June, turning 100! Cake and ice cream will be served, and Doug Sanders will play piano for us.

The dance floor was “hoppin” on Saturday, May 26 when Portage Band came to play at the Care Center.

June 14-21 is National Nursing Assistants Week. The residents want to thank all of the nursing assistants who work at the Care Center for the compassionate care they provide every day of the year. Thank you for all you do!

There are two outings planned for June. We’re hoping for a warm, sunny day on June 19 when we will be going to Harbor Park to enjoy the lake, the boats, the tourists, and hopefully the sunshine. We’ll enjoy some treats from the Dairy Queen too. On June 28, we’ll take a trip to the Senior Center for lunch, and visit with our friends there.

There will be a lot of wonderful music in June. Marco Good will be here on June 9 at 2 p.m. Harris Mills will bring his folk music to the Care Center on June 11 at 2 p.m. Pastor Daren Blanck and friends will be here on June 18 at 2 p.m. for a gospel sing-a-long, and Amy Schmidt will share her musical talent with us on June 26 at 2:30 p.m. Myron Bursheim will be performing for us on Sunday afternoons, and Susan Scherer will be playing piano for us on Wednesday afternoons.

A fun afternoon was had on May 29th when the “bear cubs” (kindergarteners) from GES came bearing flowers that they had grown to plant in our patio flower boxes.

We also look forward to a very special music event this month. The Matins Choir from Plymouth, Minn. will be coming to the Care Center on June 12 at 10:30 a.m. for a performance. The choir consists of 40 young women and men who are traveling throughout northern Minnesota, and we look forward to their visit.

To end the month on a musical note, Portage Band will bring their country music to the Care Center on Saturday, June 30 at 6:30 p.m. Community members are always welcome to join any of our music events.
