June activities at the Care Center

The residents at the Care Center are certainly looking forward to the warmer weather, and the new areas they will soon have to enjoy— both inside and out.

A most welcome addition will be a new patio area to be completed soon. Everyone is anxious to get outside for gardening, activities on the patio, or just enjoying the sunshine and birds. Our first completed household is scheduled to open soon, and the residents are excited about the new kitchen and large living area they will have to enjoy. Some of the elders are already picking out their favorite recipes, as we plan to do some baking on those rainy days!

One of the first activities that the residents have planned is to bake pumpkin bars for the construction workers as a “thanks” for their hard work in completing our first household. A “Break Time with Boldt” is scheduled for 3 p.m. on June 27.

We look forward to working with student volunteers from the Incredible Exchange Program starting in June. It is always fun to have the youth of our community come and participate in the activities with the residents.

Another fun visitor in June will be “Remedy Rose,” Lisa Bloomquist’s new little bunny, who will visit the Care Center on June 10 at 2 p.m. for some quality “cuddle time.”

The monthly birthday party will be held on June 14 at 3 p.m. to honor Donna Willett. Doug Sanders will serve cake and ice cream along with some great piano classics.

Some old-fashioned hillbilly fun is scheduled for June 20-24. A “Hillbilly Hoe Down” lunch is being planned for June 21 with some good home style cooking. There will be a Hillbilly Happy Hour with Hilja on June 20 at 2:30 p.m. and a Hoe Down Bingo scheduled for June 22 at 2:30 p.m. On June 24, some good laughs will be had watching “The Beverly Hillbillies” and enjoying some popcorn.

We have two outings planned for June. We’re hoping for a nice day on June 19 for an outing to Harbor Park, and some treats from the Dairy Queen to enjoy while watching activities on the Big Lake. On June 29 the elders will be going to the Senior Center for lunch, and to visit with our friends there.

There will be plenty of music in June too. Irene Thompson will be joining us every Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., playing all our old favorites on the piano. Pastor Daren Blanck will be back on June 12 at 2 p.m. for a gospel sing-a-long. Myron Bursheim will be here on Sunday June 18 and 25 at 2:30 p.m. Al Fuller joins us every Monday at 5:30 p.m., and Susan Scherer will be here on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. We welcome family, friends, and the community to join us at any of our music events.

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Health Care Center, courtesy of Activities Director Belinda Hudler.
