Julia Rose Luger Hennessy, 103.
Julia was born on January 8, 1910 to Martin and Susanna Luger in North St. Paul, Minn. She was the seventh child and first girl in the family of eight children. She had a happy childhood, her only complaint being that she had to ride hand-medown bicycles from her six older brothers.
Her parents and older siblings owned and operated Luger Mercantile Company in North St. Paul for many years and before her marriage she worked there also as a bookkeeper.
In 1935 she married William Edwin Hennessy from St. Paul and they had five children, all of whom survive. After the war her younger sister Marcella married her husband’s brother Joseph and they had six children making for a large extended family group.
Julia and Bill raised their children in St. Paul where Bill worked at the St. Paul Pioneer Press and Dispatch newspapers until he retired in 1972.
Julia was very proud that two of her older brothers became Catholic priests and a niece a nun. For many years Julia did volunteer work for the Worn a Bit shop and various charitable organizations.
Julia’s husband Bill passed away in 2002 at the age of 92 and Julia continued to live in Roseville or St. Paul past her 103rd birthday. Julia loved playing cards, including bridge, where she had earned quite a number of master points, as well as fishing and garden sports such as badminton and croquet as long as she was able.
Julia was a dedicated Catholic and was blessed with good health and longevity and a positive outlook. Even at the age of 103 she loved to play cards and visit with family.
She is survived by her children Mary Hennessy, Catherine (Lyman) Parkhurst, William (Sally) Hennessy, James (Yolanda) Hennessy, and Laurence (Charlotte) Hennessy. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
