Painting rocks they found on the Lake Superior beach, rocks that were pounded and pummeled, tumbled and rumbled, smothered and smoothed by the sometimes brash bumbling big lake over eons: Daisy May Krager took one of those plain old Lake Superior beach rocks and made it beautiful, and for that, for turning that plain old beach rock into a work of art, Daisy May Krager was awarded first place in the 5 and under division of the 2018 Joynes Rock Painting Contest.

Grand Marais beach rock artist Abigale Dewitt’s beautified beach stone was judged the first place winner in the 6-9-year-old class while a smiling Lizzy Harnell of Proctor won the 10-13-yearold age group. Jack Bartlam of Duluth won the 14-18 age class while Marsha Hansen’s deliciously, delicately detailed painted rock took first place in a ruggedly competitive and wonderfully talented 18 and up class.

To all who entered, all of your works were wonderful, and I’m glad I didn’t have to judge!
