Fresh off of her honeymoon, Minnesota’s new Democratic- Farmer-Labor communications director Kayla Johnson made her first visit in her new position to Cook County, a place she grew up vacationing with her family as a youngster.

Johnson was in Grand Marais on Tuesday, August 1, to ask questions about the concerns and needs of our area, which she will bring back to the St. Paul DFL headquarters.

From 2012 to 2015 Johnson spent three years serving as deputy press secretary and legislative correspondent for Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Mn.) in Washington, D.C. Over the course of the last year she served as press secretary for Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) in Washington, D.C.

While Johnson said she misses some of the excitement generated at the nation’s capitol and her friends in D.C., she is glad to be back home. A graduate of Minneapolis South High School, Kayla was born and raised in Minneapolis. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she was editor-in-chief of The Daily Cardinal, an independent student run newspaper.

Although Cook County was her first stop, it won’t be her last. She plans to visit all parts of the state when time allows, a reporter’s notebook in hand, learning as much as she can about the diverse state that we live in.
