John Victor Viren, D.V.M., 78, of Two Harbors, died Monday, October 18, 2010 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, surrounded by his family.
He was born October 27, 1931, to Edward and Viola (Palmquist) Viren in Duluth. He grew up in Duluth and graduated from Central High School in 1949. John attended Bethel College and UMD before enlisting in the Marine Corps. He served during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Japan and Hawaii.
After his return, he attended the University of Minnesota Veterinary College, graduating in 1962. John practiced veterinary medicine in White Bear Lake, Grand Marais, and in Hastings. Along with his brother Edward and their spouses, he founded the Lake Superior Trading Post in Grand Marais.
His entire life he enjoyed hunting and fishing, first with his father and brother, and later with his children and grandchildren along with his National Champion lab, Knute.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janice of Two Harbors; sons, Paul (Golda) of Santa Barbara, CA, Chuck (Kathy) of Minneapolis, and Dr. Tom (Christa) of Grand Rapids; daughters, Katie and Dr. Kris (Greg) of Two Harbors; brother Rev. Edward (Donna) of Willmar, MN; sister, Helen (Loren) Borg of Cokato, MN; grandchildren, Solveig, Hans, Annika, Elsa, Jaina, Randi, Tor, Seth, and Finn; and many nieces and nephews.
