John Schroeder Days are back! Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21 the Township of Schroeder will be abuzz with people and music and food. The event is not just for locals. It’s for everybody. (People have been known to come from as far East as Grand Marais.)
Bob Silver started the first John Schroeder Days in 1995, celebrating 100 years of Schroeder, (the township was formed in 1895, named after the Schroeder Lumber Company) and twenty-five years later, after a hiatus for Covid, John Schroeder Days is back. This year the event coincides with Schroeder Area Historical Society celebrating twenty-five years
“It’s a chance to mingle and reconnect with old friends,” says Skip Lamb from Lamb’s Resort. Events will kick off on Friday evening, August 20, with some hometown music up the Cramer Road at the Schroeder Town Hall. Trevor McSpadden will play from 6pm-7pm and Erik Koskinen Band will take things from 7pm-9pm.
Things get into high gear on Saturday, August 21. The pancake breakfast fundraiser for the Schroeder Volunteer Fire Department is from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. at the Schroeder Town Hall. The Cross River Heritage Center will host walking tours, food trucks, and music from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Around 1ish, you can wander down to the Cross River Bridge with Skip Lamb. Look at pics of the old bridge, compare it to the new bridge, and get a feel for how the area has evolved over the years.
“Local businesses are chipping in, so the event is free for everyone,” says Patrick Burns, owner of North 61. North 61 will host the Bad Seed food truck from Grand Marais for the lunch hours on Saturday. You can also find Trevor McSpadden playing music there from 1p.m.-3 p.m.
Social Hour back at the Cross River Heritage Center is 5pm-6pm with food and drinks, and you can buy tickets for the Quilt Raffle. The feature presentation is 6pm-8pm with MC Steve Michaud. The SAHS will honor the many volunteers and look back at the first of their first twenty-five years.
Erik Simula, Executive Director at the Schroeder Area Historical Society, sums it up well, “John Schroeder Days is a great opportunity for people to have some fun and learn a little history while they’re at it.” Indeed.
