John Mathias Scheffler, age 90, Cold Spring, Minnesota, died peacefully June 10, 2013 at Assumption Home with his loving family by his side.
John was born in Ellsworth, Minnesota on August 5, 1922, the son of John and Katherine (Gerardy) Scheffler. He married Ida Kellen at St. Adrian’s Catholic Church in Adrian, Minnesota on July 29, 1947.
John served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946. He was aboard the U.S.S. Herndon for four years. After his honorable discharge he was employed at the Municipal Power Plant in Worthington, Minnesota until 1953 when he was employed as Chief Engineer at the Luverne, Minnesota power plant.
In 1957 he moved his family to Taconite Harbor on the North Shore of Lake Superior where he was employed by Erie Mining Co. John retired in 1983 and moved to Cold Spring in 1986.
He was a member of St. Boniface parish, a 72-year member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of VFW Post No. 6915 and American Legion Post No. 0455 in Cold Spring. John enjoyed fishing, playing the harmonica, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ida; sons and daughters-inlaw, Gene and Kathleen Scheffler of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Eldon and Carla Scheffler of Sartell, Minnesota, Guy and Cindi Scheffler of Plymouth, Minnesota, John and Laurie Scheffler of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughters and son-in-law, Irene Durfee of Duluth, Minnesota, Karen Eliasen of Barron, Wisconsin, Carolyn and David Wood of Plymouth, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother Andrew Scheffler; sisters Celine Klein, Henrietta Bullerman, and Mildred Voss.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Elmer, and sister Rosemary Kellen.
Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, June 13, 2013 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Parish Cemetery.
Arrangements are with the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring, Minnesota.
