John Harold Schuppel, “Jack,” passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer at the North Shore Hospital, Grand Marais, with his wife Penny by his side on Aug. 6, 2017.
Jack was born Jan. 21, 1934 in Grand Rapids, Minn. to Harold and Leona Schuppel, where he lived until he was 11. He moved to Hovland with his family in 1945 when his dad was transferred here in the state forestry. Jack graduated from Grand Marais High School in 1952, his being the last class to graduate from the old school. He then drove trucks for a time.
Jack enlisted and spent two years in the Army, traveling quite a bit to places that included Africa, England, Germany and Rome, where he saw the pope.
Following his time in the Army, Jack came back to Hovland where he once again drove trucks for various people. He worked for the Cook County Highway Department for a time. Jack enjoyed the outdoors – hunting, snowmobiling, landscaping in his yard and gardening.
Jack met the woman who changed his life, Penny, in early 1997. They were married June 21, 1997 at Artists Point in Grand Marais. Jack and Penny enjoyed the peace and quiet of their home in the woods in Hovland. They enjoyed their time together hiking on the many trails they kept up, watching the wildlife around their ponds and working in their yard.
Jack and Penny moved to Grand Marais a few years ago, after Jack was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He is survived by his wife, Penny (Palmer) Schuppel; his sister Virginia (Duane) Johnson; several nieces and nephews; Penny’s son Chris Mammenga (Sara); and five grandchildren.
Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hovland.
