The North Shore Music Association will present renowned Minnesota singer/songwriter John Gorka on Oct. 10 at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
Gorka got his start in the late 1970s at Godfrey Daniels, a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. Folk meccas like Texas’ Kerrville Folk Festival (where he won the New Folk Award in 1984) and Boston followed, and his stunningly soulful baritone voice and original songwriting began turning heads. It wasn’t long before his rich multifaceted songs gained increasing attention from critics and audiences across the country, as well as in Europe, where his tours led him through Italy, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Switzerland, and Germany.
“I see my music as a refuge,” says Gorka. “I see it as a place where people can relax, take in the lyrics, and I see it as a way for me to share that refuge.”
Over the years, Gorka has produced 11 critically acclaimed albums under the Red House Records and High Street Records labels. In 2010, he released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike, it landed on the Billboard folk charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio.
Many well-known artists have recorded and performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell.
Gorka’s most recent appearance in Grand Marais was with Lucy Kaplanksy and Eliza Gilkyson as the trio Red Horse — a concert hosted by NSMA in 2013.
