John D. Woerheide, 83, died June 19, 2016 at North Shore Health in Grand Marais surrounded by his loved ones. He suffered from heart disease.
John was born December 15, 1932 to Roy and Elsie Woerheide. His sister Anne lives in St. Louis, Missouri and his brother Russell is deceased.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1957.
He attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri and received a degree in forestry there. He spent his entire career employed by the United States Forest Service; working in a lumber camp in Idaho, on the Gila and Santa Fe National Forests, spending the last 13 years of his career on the Mark Twain National Forest in Rolla, Missouri.
He retired to Lutsen in 1988. He and Debbie were drawn to Lake Superior and have enjoyed their three children living in the same area for many years.
John is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Debbie; his three children, Anna Hess (Jeff Donaldson), Jon Woerheide (Wendi) and Dave Woerheide. He has five grandchildren, Jon Thomas Woerheide (Heidi), Kristine Woerheide, Adrian Hess, Nina and Siena Woerheide.
A memorial service will be held at the Lutsen Town Park Pavilion this summer to be announced later.
