It was good day for Cook County runners at the Superior Spring Trail races sponsored by Rocksteady Running as Joey Chemlik won the 25k race and his former high school track and cross country coach April Wahlstrom won the women’s division of the 12k race.
25K, 297 entrants
Joey Chmelik, 27, Grand Marais, took first place in the Superior Spring 25k trail race held in Lutsen on the rugged Superior Hiking trails on Saturday, May 20.
Chemlik finished the course in two hours one minute and six seconds to win by eight seconds over James Sorenson, 40, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Joey averaged 7:48 per mile.
Stephen Sandberg, 46, Duluth, Minnesota, placed third in two hours, two minutes and fifty-three seconds.
Top three women finishers
Julie Johnson, 37, Anchorage, Alaska, placed thirteenth overall and first for Women with a time of two hours twenty minutes and thirty-one seconds. Julie average 9:03 per mile.
Elaine Nelson, 44, Duluth, finished second with a time of two hours and twenty-three minutes and fifty-eight seconds. Abbey Ewald, 29, Minneapolis placed third in two hours, twenty-five minutes and twenty-three seconds.
Other finishers from Cook County were Sven Hoaglund, 36, Grand Marais, who placed 26th in two ours, twenty-six minutes and twenty-two seconds. Kerrie Berg, 44, Bemidji and former Grand Marais resident, placed second in age group. Kerrie ran two hours thirty six minutes and fifty-six minutes.
Shanie Joynes, 52, Duluth/Grand Marais, placed fifth in her division and ran the course in three hours, seventeen minutes and forty-four seconds. Lill Raynard, 42, Grand Marais, finished 152 in three hours and twenty-five minutes and fifty-four seconds.
50K, 187 entrants
Drew Mueller, 39, Leavenworth, Washington, averaged 7:52 mile pace to finish first place in four hours, four minutes and thirteen seconds, about twenty-five minutes ahead of runner-up Scott Wopata, 39, Dundas, Minnesota. Thaddeus Petersen, 44, of La Crosse, Wisconsin ran the race in four hours thirty three minutes and thirty eight seconds to place third.
Women 50K top three finishers
Jaqueline Merritt, 35, Minneapolis, finished eleventh overall and first in the women’s’ division with a time of five hours and six minutes and forty-seven seconds. She averaged 9:52 per mile over the hilly, rocky trail.
Tanya Hall, 41, Warrens, Wisconsin, finished second with a time of five hours and 58 minutes and eleven seconds. Amber Thielbar, 42, New Prague, Minnesota was third with a time of five hours fifty-nine minutes and sixteen seconds. Jeanne Monson, 46, Grand Marais, placed 163 overall in three hours and thirty-two minutes and twenty-six seconds. 12K, 260 entrants Micah Dorfner, 34, Mankato, Minnesota, placed first with a time of one hour and nine seconds. He averaged 7:44 per mile. Ian Jensen, 34, Duluth, was five minutes behind Dorner and James McCluskey, 30, Omaha, Nebraska, placed third with a time of one hour six minutes and nine seconds. Ian Jensen, 34, Duluth, Minnesota, finished second in one hour five minutes and 19 seconds. James McCluskey, 30, Omaha, Nebraska, finished third in one hour six minutes and five seconds. Top three women in the 12K April Wahlstrom, 40, Grand Marias, placed eighth overall and first among women runners with a stellar time of one hour ten minutes and fifty-seven seconds. April averaged 9:08 per mile. Audrey Cyr, 36, Duluth, was one spot back in ninth place. Audrey ran one hour eleven minutes and seven seconds to lace second in the women’s field. Olivia Werner, 30, Richfield, Minnesota, ran one hour sixteen minutes and twenty-one seconds to place third. Cook County finishers in include Sidney Litterst, 14, Grand Marais, who placed 20th in one hour and twenty minutes and seven seconds. Arlo Litterst, 10, placed 21st in one hour twenty minutes and eight seconds. Chandler Litterst, 43, Grand Marais, placed 22nd, ran one hour, twenty minutes and nine seconds. Joseph Mundell, 39, Lutsen, was 23rd in one hour twenty minutes and fifty-four seconds. Jane Asay, 39, Grand Marais, finished 33rd overall. She ran the course in one hour twenty-four minutes and fifty-five seconds. Brienne Moody, 41, Grand Marais, placed 35th overall. Brienne ran one hour twenty-six minutes and thirty-nine seconds. Anton Moody, 44, Grand Marais, placed 56th in one hour thirty-four minutes and thirty-five seconds. Luke Dragswiek, 8, Grand Marais, finished 133rd and ran the course in one hour and fifty-two minutes and three seconds. Dylan Dragswiek, 44, Grand Marais, placed 134th and ran one our fifty-two minutes and three seconds. Kirsten Dierking, 61, Grand Marais, finished 168th with a time of two hours two minutes and five seconds. Crystal Christenson, 44, Tofte, placed 170th in Two hours and fifty-eight seconds. Michael Herman, 64, Tofte and Maggie Herman, 63, Tofte, placed 172nd and 173rd in two hours and three minutes and forty-nine seconds. Brianna Schuller, 45, Grand Marais, placed 174th in two hours four minutes and fourteen seconds. Sarah Dragswiek, 44, Grand Marais, placed 206th overall in two hours seventeen minutes and forty-four seconds. Jack Dragswiek, 12, placed 207th in two hours seventeen minutes and forty-four seconds.
