After 16 years of serving Cook County as a supervisor for the Soil & Water Conservation District
SWCD), Jim Hall has decided to not seek reelection. Jim is a humble leader and often encourages that new programs be implemented through the SWCD. Over the years, the board has been instrumental in implementing hundreds of conservation projects and practices.
From its beginning, SWCD has played an role in regional Jim has been the representation to groups such as the Minnesota SWCD Forestry Committee; Laurentian Resource, Conservation, and Development; Herald North Shore Forest Collaborative; Cook County Aquatic Invasive Species Team; and the MN Association of Conservation Districts, to name a few.
Jim has missed very few monthly meetings or committee assignments over his years of service and models a commitment to conservation that is vital to the health of this county. His knowledge and enthusiastic presence will be missed.
The position of SWCD supervisor is an opportunity for people who are interested in a wide variety of natural resource concerns, including but not limited to water quality, soil erosion, forestry and stormwater management. Supervisors meet monthly to discuss the business of the SWCD, state grant allocations to landowners, district conservation priorities, coordination with other local units of government and state agencies and legislative priorities. Supervisors do not receive a salary, although they do receive compensation for attending meetings and are reimbursed for expenses.
Those interested in running for supervisor should file at the County Auditor’s Office from May 22 to June 5, 2018. SWCD candidates appear on the ballot for the general election, which will take place on November 6, 2018. For District boundaries or additional information, contact the SWCD office at 387-3647.
