The world is missing a gentle soul.
The family and friends of Jerry Lawson would like to share the sad news that Jerry died early in the morning, on Saturday, January 25, 2020.
Jerry touched many hearts with his kind and peaceful way, and leaves behind a vast community of dear friends and loving family, the most important being the love of his life, Randy Eastlund, who stayed close by his side through sunny days and rainy days.
Jerry was a Vietnam War veteran. The Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia that caused his death has been attributed to his exposure to Agent Orange while serving. He bravely fought the illness for many years.
Jerry lived a rich life. He worked for the National Science Foundation at the South Pole, and built houses in Alaska, Hawaii, The Virgin Islands, and Grand Marais. He sailed with friends down the Atlantic coast of Africa and in the Galapagos Islands. He studied at massage schools in Thailand and though well-traveled, Jerry always loved coming home to the north woods and the Lake Superior coast of Minnesota that he adored.
Jerry was well known among friends as an excellent pie maker. He made all kinds, but his favorite was rhubarb. Jerry started an heirloom rhubarb patch years ago with roots from his grandpa’s plants. He brought hundreds of pounds of it to our local food co-op, from what become known as “Jerry’s Rhubarb Ranch” on Good Harbor Hill.
Friends and family are planning an early summer pie social and gathering to celebrate Jerry’s life, with more details to be announced in the spring.
