Janice Updyke
of Grand Marais, Minnesota, passed away on November 18, 2010 after a long illness.
Janice was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin to Raymond and Florence Dorr. The family lived in Chippewa Falls for four years, moving to Fabens, Texas where Mr. Dorr worked with the U.S. Border Patrol. Her family then moved to International Falls, Minnesota before settling in Grand Marais in 1959 where Janice attended eighth through 12th grade at Cook County High School.
After high school, Janice married Bruce Updyke, and then moved to Duluth, Eugene, Oregon, and Madison, Wisconsin where Bruce attended college. They had two daughters. Janice’s family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1976 where Bruce Updyke worked as a professor at Louisiana State University Medical Center.
Janice worked in the mortgage banking field for many years and lived in Baton Rouge after her divorce in 1984. She lived in Baton Rouge until moving to Grand Marais in 2008 for her retirement and to be closer to her family.
Janice maintained friendships from her high school years and especially enjoyed spending time with those friends after her return to Grand Marais.
Janice is survived by her daughters, Rochelle Updyke Gump of Gaithersburg, Maryland and Jennifer Updyke Ismail of Cairo, Egypt; her four grandchildren; and her brother, Richard Dorr of Grand Marais.
At this time, a memorial service is planned in Grand Marais for the summer of 2011 when all of the surviving family can be together.
