James Leon Huskey


James Leon Huskey passed away with his wife at his side, at his winter home in Laughlin, Nevada, on January 28, 2021, after a long battle with multiple illnesses. He was born in Portland, Oregon, to Dorothy (Smith) and Tex Leon Huskey. He grew up in the San Diego, California area, but spent summers in Grand Marais, Minnesota, with Aunts and Uncles. He was drafted into the Army where he spent time in Vietnam. He was very proud to be a Veteran. After being discharged, he returned to San Diego where he worked many jobs: Plumbing, Masonry, Firefighter for Cleveland National Forest Service, but was especially proud spending time building the elephant enclosures at the Escondido Wild Animal Park.

In 1971, Jim met Betty, they were married in 1972. Jim moved his family to Cook County in 1974 where he worked for Hedstrom Lumber Company and Backlund Construction. Jim was offered an opportunity to go to Alaska and work commercial fishing, which years later resulted in becoming a partner in a herring boat. In the off-season, Jim worked construction and then became an owner operator hauling wood products. Years later, Jim sold his truck and worked for Halvor Lines driving over the road until he retired.

Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at South of the Border Cafe visiting with friends.

Jim is survived by his wife Betty, daughter Dawn Huskey (Jim Olson), son Lance (Mandy) Huskey and much-loved grandson Johnathan Huskey.

Jim is proceeded in death by his mother Dorothy (Smith) Johnson, stepfather Gale Johnson, Father Tex Huskey and sister Joan Spratley- Cogswell
