Jim passed away at the age of 84 at his home in Grand Marais, Minnesota, on March 31, 2021.

Jim was born December 31, 1936, in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, to James Gustaf Hane and Emma Minnie Hane, nee Kern. Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife Ada Ruth Hane, nee Spotted Horse, brother Reverend Richard C. Hane, and grandson Garon Glen. Jim is survived by daughters Mary Hane and Karen Hane, grandchildren: Jinsey Smith, Rumer Rodne, Racey Rodne (Kelly), Cole Spinelli, Summer Johnson, and Leah Johnson.

Jim’s passion for the environment and nature led him to a career in forestry with the Department of Natural Resources for 25 years. He especially enjoyed parks design in Washington State, most notably the McLane Creek nature trail at the Capitol Forest near Olympia, Washington. The trail was completed in the late 1970’s and is still enjoyed today.

Jim and his family returned to Minnesota and settled in Grand Marais. Jim continued his career with the Department of Natural Resources, retiring in 1991. After retirement, Jim and Ruth had many adventures travelling on their Gold Wing across the country. After Ruth’s passing, Jim continued to travel here and abroad. He thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and their cultures. Writing novels was also a favorite pastime. Jim also played an integral part in tree planting during his lifetime. He helped plant the tall pines seen along Interstate Highway 35 near Hinckley, Minnesota, and the flowering trees on boulevards in Grand Marais. He also led teams that planted many trees throughout Minnesota. Jim loved his trees.

A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, May 8, 2021, 1:00 p.m. outside at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 417 1st Avenue West, Grand Marais, Minnesota.

Jim will be buried next to his wife at Saddle Mountain Cemetery, Mountain View, Oklahoma.

Jim will be lovingly remembered for his “talks,” wisdom, and his love for God and His creation. We will miss listening to your stories and making us laugh. Till we meet again…
