Jacobsen plays big role in Thunderwolves basketball

Former Cook County High School great Essa Jacobsen recently helped her Thunder Bay Lakehead College women’s basketball team to a final four finish in Canada’s collegiate playoffs.

On March 6, the Lakehead Thunderwolves lost to the Number 1 seed Windsor Lancers by a score of 57-31. Lakehead’s top player, Jylisa Williams, suffered a concussion in that game during the first half of play and was out the remainder of the game.

The Thunderwolves finished second in their league with a 14-5 record.

Jacobsen averaged 24.7 minutes of playing time per game, scoring 9.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per outing. The junior forward made almost half of her shot attempts for the season, shooting 47.7 percent from the field.

Jylisa Williams, a Lakehead College senior who hails from Atlanta, Georgia, averaged 28.8 points and 9 rebounds per game. She was named the top player in all of Canada, recently earning the Nan Copp award.

A psychology major, Jacobsen has one more year of eligibility left.

Essa is the daughter of John and Heidi Jacobsen of Grand Marais. She is a 2010 graduate of Cook County High School.
