On Sunday, February 28, the Polar League Conference’s girls’ basketball coaches met to select the 2009-2010 All-Conference team. The conference selects the league’s Most Valuable Player, five first team selections, five second team selections, and then 10 players are selected for honorable mention honors. Player selected are then invited to play in the Polar League All- Star game.
This season, Barnum’s Katrina Newman was named the conference MVP. First team selections were Sarah Myhre and Jessica Newman of Esko, Alissa Autio of Floodwood, Keely Deedrick of Esko, and Cook County’s Essa Jacobsen.
Jacobsen has had a marvelous career highlighted by statistics that are well above 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. This season she has averaged 12.0 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. More importantly, her defensive presence and leadership have been instrumental in Cook County’s 21-4 regular season. Jacobsen also made over 60 percent of her shots from the field and averaged 2.3 steals per game.
Second team selections were Leah Nordvall of Barnum, Amanda Bergstedt of Esko, Natasha Dragicevich of Moose Lake, Maija Rouvala of Floodwood, and Cook County’s Christina Nelson.
Nelson has had a great season for Cook County, averaging 10.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.9 steals, and 3.8 assists per game. Her great all-around play has been a key component for the Vikings this season.
Honorable mention selections were Cook County’s Brea Boomer; Katie Myhre of Barnum; Sarah Aili of Carlton; Ari Korpela of Cromwell; Lydia Pelletier and Svana Trapp of Esko; Brea Durovec of Floodwood; Sarah Sample of McGregor; Abby Ray of Two Harbors; and Maddy Adamczak of Moose Lake.
Boomer has had a breakout year as junior, averaging 10 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.6 steals, and 3.5 steals per game. Boomer has also become one of the area’s best defensive players with her combination of speed, strength, and competitiveness.
Jacobsen, Nelson, and Boomer will all play in the seventh annual Polar League All-Star game on Monday, March 29. The girls’ game will be at 6:00 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 7:45 p.m.
