Jack “Captain” Colby Halverson




Jack “Captain” Colby Halverson passed away peacefully at the North Shore Care Center with his family at his side on Sunday, July 6, 2014.

Jack was born August 23, 1938 on Hungry Jack Lake in Grand Marais to Marjorie and Walter “Jeff” Halverson.

Jack attended school in Grand Marais.

He married Caroline Joyce Antoniak (Grist) of Grand Marais in April 1987.

Jack served in the United States Navy from November 17, 1955 to May 25, 1959 at the U.S. Naval Receiving Station in San Diego, California.

He worked at the Grain Belt Brewery in Minneapolis for 15 years and moved back to Grand Marais in the fall of 1977. He worked various construction and cleaning jobs throughout the county and was a money courier for Grand Portage for many years.

Jack enjoyed anything that involved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and snowmobiler.

He enjoyed playing card and dice games with friends and family.

Jack was well known to lend a helping hand to those who needed it and always had a good joke or two to tell you.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Caroline; and brother-in-law Richard “Dickie” Larson.

Jack is survived by his sister Kay (Dickie) Larson of Green Bay, Wisconsin; brother Fred (Marilyn) Halverson of St. Paul; son John Antoniak of Norfolk, Virginia; daughter Cheryl (Ed) Walimaa of Grand Marais; son Dean Antoniak of Tepic, Mexico; grandchildren Paul Samuelson and Sarah Antoniak; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at American Legion Post 413 in Grand Marais on Monday, August 4 from 3 – 6 p.m.

The family asks that memorials be made in remembrance of Jack to American Legion Post 413 or the Cook County North Shore Care Center activities department.
