It’s show time at the library: Summer reading program begins June 3

Sign-ups for the Grand Marais Public Library’s summer reading program, “It’s Showtime at Your Library,” begin on Monday, June 3. Kids ages zero to 18 can choose between several ways of tracking their reading and learning activities and earning free books and other prizes. All the materials and instructions will be available at the library throughout the summer, so kids can start their chosen program any time. In addition to reading logs, the library will have theme-related activities and special events all summer long:

. Family Story Time: Join us for stories, songs, and a craft or game on Tuesdays, June 11-Aug. 6, 10:30-11:15 a.m. All ages welcome.

. Touch, See, Write, Draw: Award-winning science writer Anne Brataas leads a free, drop-in science, writing and illustration lab for kids entering grades K-12 on Wednesdays, July 1-Aug. 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. Explore Lake Superior through the “jolly ologies”: limnology, phenology, ichthyology, zoology, microbiology, and more.

. Wundrous Readers Society: On Thursdays, 4-5 p.m., the Wundrous Readers Society meets for lemonade, doodling, and reading aloud. The books we read are aimed toward ages 9-12, but all ages are welcome. Don’t worry if you miss a week or we’re in the middle of a series. We’ll catch you up as we go.

. Crafternoon: Find your creative genius at the library Mondays through Thursdays, June 10-Aug. 8, 2-4 p.m. We’ll have a different activity every week, including Perler beads, altered book art, magic tricks, animation, and more.

. Read With Aspen: Aspen is a registered therapy animal with the Pet Partners program. She is at the library on Saturdays, 11 a.m. to noon. You can reserve a 20-minute slot by calling the library at (218) 387-1140, or come and read on a first-come first-served basis.

. Where’s Declan? Declan, our Summer Reading Program mascot, keeps sneaking out of the library and taking selfies all around town. Guess where he’s been each week to be entered in a prize drawing.

. Library Scavenger Hunts: Solve clues and find hidden objects around the library and be entered in a prize drawing. There will be a new set of clues each week.

. Special Events: It really is show time at the library with the Brodini Comedy Magic Show (June 18), The Dollipops (June 21), Kenny Ahern (July 8), Old MacDonald Had a Banjo (July 23), and Grand Marais’ own Rose Arrowsmith DeCoux (Aug. 5).

The program is to wrap up and celebrate reading, learning, and creating with a picnic on the library lawn on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m.
