It’s not about hate

A Letter to The Editor a few weeks ago written by concerned parents and taxpayers about Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) held at a publicly owned entity has caused, what seems to be, some pretty unfair responses. The signers simply think that the use and promotion of DQSH in/by a government owned facility isn’t the best use of public funds.

Reading some of the arguments in favor of Drag Queen Story Hour and against the above-mentioned letter and petition which I have supported, signed, and found to be appropriately reasonable has prodded me to ask a few questions.

It’s stated that the library’s mission is to serve “underprivileged communities,” which is defined by The Merriam Webster Dictionary as ‘having fewer esp. economic and social privileges than others.” So, are these Drag Queens destitute or denied entrance to places? And, if so, how does reading stories to children help their situation?

Then there’s dragqueestoryhour.com which states that this activity “is aimed at encouraging kids to be their authentic selves.” Not to be facetious, but how is an inauthentic woman supposed to help that? And am I supposed to believe that children cannot find their “authentic selves” without DQ Story Hour? Would the kids rebel if story hour wasn’t done by DQs? Has there been a study, I’m unaware of, that DQSH is a positive learning experience? How did the many previous generations find their “authentic selves”?

I signed this petition because this seems like an unnecessary experiment involving children and we don’t know what the outcome will be.

But my personal motive for this letter came when I found out that a person who works at the local school district, and that doesn’t know me, doesn’t know my acquaintances, my friends, my relatives, or any of my life experiences, and likely knows very few of the petitioners, decided to mimic Hillary by lumping all of us into a “basket” and doing a character assassination by declaring all of us bigots. The school district should take this person aside, explain that mass psychoanalysis doesn’t work, and there’s a difference between disagreement and hate. She might try judging people one at a time. It could be a learning experience that slows down the division that’s so rampant in this nation.
