2023 is the year to party with the Arrowhead Eagles Aviation Organization to celebrate 75 years of aviation history in Cook County. The Cook County aviation story begins with the FAA designation of Skyport Airport as the official airport of Grand Marais-Cook County in November 1948. Skyport airport was built by Clarence J. Krotz as a dream of his to establish a wilderness lodge, airfield and seaplane base in northern Minnesota. The Krotz story and other aspects of how aviation came to Cook County will be highlighted during the Eagles pancake breakfast Saturday, September 18, at the Grand Marais airport, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
“This is a significant opportunity for Cook County to rally behind aviation and celebrate all that aviation has and will continue to bring to us,” said Mike Raymond, President of the Arrowhead Eagles Aviation Organization. “We are pleased to partner with the airport commission board, Skyport Lodge, Cook County Historical Society, Visit Cook County tourism, and other organizations and individuals to promote this event. For this reason, we are alerting the public now to this celebration event and date and encourage individuals and organizations to volunteer to help make this a huge success.”
The actual celebration in 2023 will be on Saturday, September 16. Further details will be forthcoming in the coming months. An initial draft plan will be available at the pancake breakfast this Saturday, along with other information on our aviation history. Suggestions on how to best promote aviation for this program are encouraged and will be much appreciated. A final celebration plan will be completed by next fall. Suggestions and/or ideas can be directed to Mik Raymond, mjrpine@icloud.com.
