Isle Royale Families and Friends Association (IRFFA) will hold its winter meeting on Saturday, Jan. 15 at Barkers Island Inn, Superior, Wis. A workshop on preserving historic pictures and archives will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. IRFFA invites anyone who has old pictures, diaries, letters, etc. to bring them to the workshop to be digitally preserved.
Training will be given on methods and standards for preserving these items using scanners and on transferring techniques to CDs. The goal is to interest long-time visitors to the island to locate, uncover, and rediscover interesting, unique and important pictures and archives that are part of their family collections to ensure that they are preserved and made available to all who hold an interest in the history and culture of Isle Royale from a bygone day.
Following the workshop, IRFFA will have a social gathering beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. After dinner, a presentation on Isle Royale by Dr. Phil Scarpino, the author of the recently released Context Study on cultural resources on Isle Royale, will be given.
The meeting and dinner are open to the public, but reservations are required. Anyone interested in attending or for more information, contact David C. Barnum at (847)727-2446, or dcbarnum@gmail.com.
