ISD 166 School Board begins search for new district superintendent

On April 8, 2021, the ISD 166 school board began a search for “an exceptional leader” to be the next District Superintendent. Cook County ISD 166 covers 3,340 square miles and serves the North Shore communities of Grand Marais, Lutsen, Tofte, Schroeder, Gunflint Trail, Hovland, and Grand Portage. The district has a current enrollment of 417 students, with small class sizes and a dedicated, diverse staff. The district Mission Statement reads, in part, “Cook County ISD 166 is committed to academic excellence. We promote success for each student through high expectations and responsiveness to the individual student’s needs.” Their vision, in its entirety, can be read on the district webpage.

As a first step in filling the role of superintendent, the school board members sought out community stakeholder input via a survey in search of valuable information to aide in this process. All responses to surveys were kept anonymous. A team from the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) Executive Search Service (led by Lee Warne) has been selected to assist the school board. A vacancy brochure has also been created, stating an application deadline of May 3, 2021. A leadership profile including a list of desired outcomes for potential candidates was also made public. Screening and interview dates were noted, along with an approved contract date of May 26. The Superintendent would then begin employment within the district on July 1, 2021. Previous Superintendent experience was stated as preferred, but not required. The vacancy brochure also stated that the board would negotiate a competitive compensation package, with experience and qualifications to be taken under consideration.

While the current administration team of Ms. Megan Myers and Mr. Mitch Dorr have each decided not to pursue the permanent superintendent position, they will remain in the positions of building principal and assistant principal/activities director, respectively. Myers, who has held the position of interim superintendent, stated, “Using MSBA to conduct a search increases our chances of finding a quality candidate.” Myers also shared, “I love being engaged with the curriculum, staff, students and families as the principal. I look forward to learning about the process of hiring a superintendent and transitioning that person into our community.” Assistant Principal & Activities Director Mitch Dorr explained, “I think consistency is an important part of any sound public school. I think my role as the assistant principal and activities director is where I belong for now.” Both administrators serve as strong advocates for the forward movement and growth of the Cook County School District and community.
