To the editor, Cook County News-Herald and the good citizens of Cook County.
A call to stand!
Monday, November 27, 2017, at 6 p.m. I, along with many of my fellow Cook County residents, stood before the Cook County Board of Commissioners and listened as they attempted to justify the insane.
The meeting started with the county administrator (who I am fairly certain channels the Sheriff of Nottingham) explaining the justification for the 20 percent tax levy that all but Commissioner Deschampe endorse. We thank Commissioner Deschampe for his understanding that we are not a bottomless pit from which this board may continue to mine money. Board Chair Sivertson then advised us “the people of Cook County” that we would be granted a whopping three minutes each to state our position on the matter.
Commissioner Sivertson (channeling the spirit of King George of England) read names from a list of people who had signed up to speak. With the exception of one (1) the people of Cook County wailed under the yoke of “Excessive Taxation.”
Commissioner Sivertson along with County Administrator Jeff Cadwell time and again threatened, bullied and attempted to gag the good citizens of Cook County. Commissioner Sivertson was so busy watching the “3-minute clock” I would be amazed if she heard a word we said. Seldom in my experience have I witnessed such arrogance, such disregard, such dismissal for any group of people.
Driving home after the meeting I was reminded of the words of our Founding Fathers, “When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them…”
With this in mind, I call on my fellow Cook County property tax payers to stand. To stand with the men and women in the fields of Sterling. To stand with the men of Concord. To stand at the lunch counter and to raise the red, white and blue banner of freedom and say to this board NO!
Should this board, in fact, burden us with this tax I ask that my fellow taxpayers with me seek out the process by which these commissioners can be removed from their elected positions post haste. I ask that my fellow Cook County residents boycott Commissioner Sievertson’s business and to encourage their family, friends and those who will listen to join them in this endeavor. I seek to send a message to this board and all future boards that when you ask for the people’s trust you must honor that trust.
I remind this board that they were elected to do the people’s work. Not to strip our cupboards of every last morsel. You the county commissioners of Cook County are merely “civil servants.” To that may I remind you that we “the people of Cook County” are the “civil” and you, “The Cook County Board of Commissioners” are the “servant.”
