Grand Marais is currently in the lead in Budget Travel magazine’s contest to crown the coolest small towns in America. Grand Marais was nominated by a crowd-sourced voting process, which included over 200 nominations.
“This is a great honor for Grand Marais,” said Linda Kratt, director of Visit Cook County. “We’re competing against towns located throughout the country, including Hawaii. If we win, the publicity we receive will mean more visitors to our area and more business for our local restaurants, shops and lodging owners. Grand Marais has some tough competition. ”
Those competitors include Allegan, Michigan; Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, Blanco, Texas; Chincoteague, Virginia; Fort Myers Beach, Florida; and Pismo Beach, California.
Here’s what the magazine said about Grand Marais:
“Get your canoe on! Here on the north shore of Lake Superior, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is one of the world’s perfect paddling destinations, with miles of waterways to navigate. Whether you’re craving a romantic getaway or a real adventure, Grand Marais has a little something for everyone, including cozy B&Bs, a vibrant arts community, an annual Fisherman’s Picnic, Superior National Forest, and restaurants whose names say it all: Angry Trout Café, Crooked Spoon, and Sven and Ole’s pizza!”
Voting in the 10th annual contest is open until 11:59 p.m. Feb. 25, when one town will be crowned coolest. The top towns will be celebrated in an online feature and an upcoming issue of Budget Travel.
