IRRRB awards two grants to Cook County

On December 21, the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) awarded more than $1.5 million in grants throughout the region, with two awards going to Cook County.

Cook County received $100,000 to help pay for Phase II Cook County Airport runway improvements. Those upgrades consist of widening and extending the runway from 4,200 to 5,000 feet.

The expansion and extension will allow large wildfire firefighting aircraft, all weather medical evacuation aircraft and larger multifunction commercial and private aircraft to land.

Lutsen Township was awarded $300,000 for the Superior National at Lutsen golf course Phase II work, which includes erosion control and clearing, mass grading, drainage, reconstruction of greens, grassing, and landscape and installing an irrigation system. All told Phase II work at the golf course will cost $5,137,456 to complete.

The IRRRB considered eight development infrastructure projects and investment in two rural broadband projects at this meeting.

“These projects all contribute to improving the quality of life and attractiveness of communities within our service area,” said IRRRB Commissioner Mark Phillips.
